Hanna Hõrak, Associate Professor of Molecular Plant Physiology at the University of Tartu Institute of Technology, has received a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grant to study how cell patterns form in plant leaves. The knowledge gained will support the breeding of plants suited to future climates.

University of Tartu is the most successful applicant for Horizon Europe funding in Estonia
A recent overview published by the Estonian Research Council (ETAG) reveals that Estonia has performed exceptionally well in the European Union’s framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon Europe (2021–2027). Among Estonian institutions, the University of Tartu has been the most successful participant in the programme, receiving almost €90 million in funding.

Study to Understand Oscillatory Mechanisms Affecting Cell Fate
The aim of the project is to induce the model cell system’s cells into a fluctuating state after etoposide treatment, to characterize the cell states before fluctuation, during fluctuation, and in the final outcome, and to correlate these states with chromatin organization. This will be parameterized by phase separation image analysis using confocal microscopy and topological data computation after collecting SMLM (Single Molecule Localization Microscopy) data.

BioStyrene
Replacing fossil fuel–based and environmentally harmful plastics with sustainable biomaterials is one of the most critical challenges for researchers today. The "BioStyrene" consortium, led by the University of Tartu and joined by five international partners, aims to replace fossil-based styrene with lignin-derived alternatives. Lignin, which makes up about a third of wood, is the main naturally occurring aromatic compound.

University of Tartu is the only research institution in Estonia to be positively evaluated in all six fields of research
On 23 May 2025, Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallas approved the results of the external evaluation of Estonian research and development. The University of Tartu was the only institution in Estonia to receive a positive evaluation in all six fields: natural sciences, engineering and technology, medical and health sciences, agriculture and veterinary sciences, social sciences, and humanities and the arts.
