On 6 May, the FireStop project partners and a representative of the funder gathered at the Institute of Technology in Tartu to discuss the project's progress and future plans.
Wooden houses- and timber industry in Latvia and Estonia are well developed and is one of the most export-oriented sectors. According to the EU regulations it is mandatory to apply fire retardants (FR) on all public wooden buildings. Currently, the existing FR-s tend to leach out into environment due impact of rain and moisture, the protective effect decreases, and leached product might cause environmental harm in water and soil. Developing such product is a complex process requiring interdisciplinary knowledge that is not available in one country and thus cross-border cooperation is inevitable. The knowledge of FR development and scale-up/production from Estonia is combined with FR testing, sustainability evaluation and end-user experience from Latvia.
The meeting addressed aspects of sustainability and life cycle assessment (LCA), introduced the development of fire-resistant materials, and provided an overview of the market and trends related to fire-resistant materials. A laboratory tour and fire test were conducted. In the lab, partners were given an overview of the preparation of new formulations and the initial tests. During the fire test, the effect of the current product was demonstrated in comparison to untreated wood.
As the lead partner, we were delighted to host the project partners and the representative of the funder.
