My name is Martin Valvas, I am a second-year Computer Engineering student and a graduate of Tamme Gymnasium's natural sciences program.
Computer engineering is not an easy field of study and can be very demanding at times, but I feel that I am gaining valuable knowledge and skills that are important in our rapidly developing technological world. I chose computer engineering because I want to develop technological solutions that support environmental sustainability in the future. Already in my first year at University, I used the knowledge I had acquired to build a new electric motorbike from an old petrol moped. This earned me third place in the circular technology creation competition Improving the World With My Own Hands. During my studies, my understanding of technology has grown significantly, and this has given me the opportunity to understand many of the technological systems that surround us.
In addition to my studies, I am actively involved in several student organizations in Tartu, such as the Tartu Student Nature Conservation Circle (TYLKR) and AEGEE-Tartu, where I can network across Europe and gain experience through organising various events. I also participated in the Delta X robotics competition, where my team's robot won first place in the robot basketball competition. These activities give me the opportunity to expand my knowledge outside my field of study and develop my communication skills and participating in teamwork. Cooperation with students from other fields is enriching and broadens my horizons. In my free time, when I happen to have some, I work on various technology-related projects, such as FPV drones, servers, and other smart systems. I also enjoy hiking and learning about nature, which helps me think about what technological solutions could be used to help the environment.
