The IMS Lab in the institute of technology held a course „Training on multi-scale modelling simulations for additive manufacturing“ for students. By passing the course, students who were interested in working as a design engineer could evaluate their competencies and knowledge in additive manufacturing (AM). They could analyze their skills and knowledge necessary working in that field. The course addressed the most common needs for AM engineers. It was a hands-on experience in optimization of product design, mostly concentrating on topology optimization.
It was organized within the project TR-AM which is funded by EIT Manufacturing. The aim of this project is to evaluate the knowledge gap in companies that want to implement AM. Many manufacturing companies and engineering offices are entering AM. The integration of digital AM simulation of the design and the process to the engineering is a challenging part of the implementation of AM. To succeed in implementing simulation, it is necessary to build up knowledge in digital multi-scale modelling. Training of actual design professionals and future professional engineers in universities is necessary to fill the existing knowledge gap. Subsequently, tailored training packages on AM multi-scale modeling and simulation will be offered to fill the gap. Furthermore, the developed nuggets will be used by universities to educate the future workforce and researchers to achieve synergies and to scale up impact.
