Studies

Science and Technology ja Bioengineering study programmes briefing takes place 4. september 2023 at 14.00, Nooruse 1- 121.

UT Institute of Technology offers high-level education in all study levels - our aim is to lay the foundation for novel and solutions and therefore, be the driver of innovation.

We are multidisciplinary research institution. Our broad-based education gives a strong advantage in the job market in Estonia and abroad. Institute of Technology combines computer engineering, robotics, electronics, material science, biosciences and environmental technologies in order to create the best opportunities for our students. The students are working with researchers who are developing novel solutions in all fields, starting from medicine to space technology.

Practical research projects give a chance to acquire necessary skills in companies during the study programmes. This allows to work during and after the studies in the relevant field. We establish an environment for future top specialists and scientists.

Science and Technology

The international three year Bachelor’s programme in Science and Technology at the University of Tartu, Estonia has innovative content and comprises selected parts of all that is taught in the Faculty of Science and Technology. It provides a broad overview of natural and exact sciences and technologies. In the first year, the students study subjects which give good basic knowledge and prepare for work with modern technologies and materials. Later it is possible to choose a suitable field of specialisation, based on the acquired knowledge about different fields.

Students can choose a combined specialization in either genetics and biotechnology; bioengineering and robotics; or chemistry and materials science. The general objective of the curriculum is to provide the graduates with a broad-based academic education in the natural sciences, which enables continuing studies on the Master’s level or commencing work in professions that require basic knowledge in the field and simpler working skills, such as at monitoring centres, different technological enterprises and laboratories as a member of a technologically competent lab personnel. So after graduation, students may either continue their studies in any field of natural science or work for a technology company.

Bioengineering

Bioengineering supports the fast growing fields of industrial biotechnology and circular bioeconomy that are expected to become the key solutions for the humanity’s goal to achieve biosustainability of our planet. There is also a growing need for specialists in bioengineering as industrial biotechnology and synthetic biology will be the basis of industrial revolution of the 21-st century. The master’s program in bioengineering is an interdisciplinary curriculum which combines different fields of applied biotechnology, synthetic biology, engineering and information technology.

The main aim of the program is to educate specialists with skills and knowledge that will help them to find jobs and contribute to the success of various companies working on the field of industrial or medical biotechnology, circular bioeconomy, bioprocessing etc. The graduates will have understanding and practical experience covering the main industrial bioprocesses, fermentation, design of biological systems, industrial biotechnology, and biomedical technologies. The curriculum emphasizes practical training, and provides internships in various companies that are active in the fields of biotechnology and biomedical technology.

The Master’s degree offers career opportunities in the field of industrial biotechnology in the European Union and world-wide. The Nordic and Baltic region is an especially attractive job market where companies are searching for young talents with special skills in synthetic biology and industrial biotechnology.  The Nordic region is one of the fastest growing hubs in the world in industrial biotechnology expecting to hire thousands of newly trained specialists in coming years.

Robotics and Computer Engineering

Thesis defence

The curriculum is in English and focuses on practical projects and learning. Students will acquire new and practical knowledge and experience in computer engineering, robotics, informatics, space technology and other fields.

Students have the opportunity to study one semester (24 ECTS) in a relevant filed company or in a research group. External module can be done in universities abroad or with companies in relevant field. Additionally, you can choose modules in leadership and economy in order to continue in doctoral studies, create a company or work as a chief engineer.

Students have the chance to study in excellence digital electronics laboratories that are equipped with modern technology and tools. Therefore, the study environment creates the best environment for learning, but also research and development activities.

  • Choose from three different specializations: computer engineering, robotics or space technology
  • The curriculum combines software and hardware, high-tech systems and tools
  • The curriculum focuses on practical learning, during which realistic tasks with nanosatellites, robots and intelligent materials are solved.
